Foreword

It is with great pleasure and a deep sense of academic commitment that we present this special issue of SARVALOKUM: Law and Society – Multidisciplinary National Peer-Reviewed Journal, dedicated to the theme “EmpowerHER: Advocating Women’s Rights and Empowerment.” This special issue emerges from the Two-Day Multidisciplinary National Conference organized by the Research Centre, V. T. Choksi Sarvajanik Law College, on 23rd and 24th December, 2025, as part of the research project awarded by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR).

The theme “EmpowerHER” reflects the continuing need to examine women’s rights and empowerment not as isolated concerns, but as interconnected questions of law, justice, social structure, economic opportunity, political participation, education, health, technology, human rights, and institutional representation. Women’s empowerment requires more than formal recognition of rights. It requires effective access to justice, equal opportunities, meaningful participation in decision-making, economic independence, social dignity, and an institutional environment capable of addressing structural inequalities.

The national conference was conceived as a multidisciplinary academic platform bringing together academicians, researchers, legal professionals, policymakers, and students from diverse disciplines. Its purpose was to facilitate meaningful dialogue on gender equality, women’s rights, and empowerment, while examining contemporary challenges faced by women in social, legal, political, and economic spheres. The conference also sought to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and generate research-based policy recommendations for advancing gender justice in India.

The contributions included in this special issue reflect the wide intellectual scope of the conference. The themes extend across law and justice, political science and public administration, sociology and social work, economics and commerce, education and psychology, literature, culture and media, science, technology and digital innovation, health, law and human rights, international and comparative perspectives, environmental and rural development studies, and the role of women in the judiciary, legal profession and leadership.

A central concern running through this issue is the relationship between law and lived experience. Constitutional guarantees of equality, dignity and non-discrimination provide an essential foundation for women’s rights, yet the realization of these values depends upon effective legislation, responsive institutions, judicial interpretation, social awareness and accessible mechanisms of justice. The papers in this issue therefore encourage readers to look beyond the existence of rights on paper and to examine how those rights operate in the everyday lives of women.

This special issue also recognizes that women’s empowerment is shaped by rapid social and technological change. Digital platforms, artificial intelligence, online communication, e-commerce and new forms of media have created fresh opportunities for participation, education and economic development. At the same time, they have generated new concerns relating to privacy, cyber harassment, digital safety, online exploitation, representation and access. A contemporary discussion of women’s rights must therefore respond to both the possibilities and the risks created by the digital environment.

Equally important is the need to understand women’s empowerment through the lens of education, health, economic security, rural development, leadership and social inclusion. The conference focused on examining the status of women’s rights from legal, social and economic perspectives, analysing the role of law, policy and institutional mechanisms, encouraging interdisciplinary research, and developing practical recommendations for the better implementation of women-centric laws and policies.

The papers published in this issue represent different disciplinary methods, perspectives and research concerns, yet they are united by a common commitment to the principles of equality, dignity, justice and empowerment. Such diversity is particularly important in the study of gender issues, because the challenges faced by women cannot be fully understood through a single discipline or institutional lens.

This special issue, Volume 3, Issue 2, October 2026, of SARVALOKUM: Law and Society, published by the Research Centre, V. T. Choksi Sarvajanik Law College, continues the journal’s commitment to promoting multidisciplinary scholarship and meaningful academic discourse.

We express our sincere gratitude to the academicians, researchers, contributors, reviewers, advisory members, organizing team and participants who have contributed to the academic value of this special issue. Their scholarly engagement has helped create a platform for discussion, critical reflection and the exchange of ideas on some of the most important questions concerning women’s rights and gender justice.

It is our hope that this special issue will serve not merely as a collection of research papers, but as a meaningful academic resource for scholars, students, legal professionals, policymakers and all those engaged in the advancement of women’s rights. Through continued research, dialogue and institutional commitment, the vision of “EmpowerHER” can contribute to a more equal, just, inclusive and dignified society.
